New accounting obligations for SMEs from July 2026

What is changing?

From 1 July 2026, all SMEs with annual turnover exceeding €600,000 must keep their accounting books in a standardised electronic format compatible with the AEAT's Verifactu system.

Key implications

  • Day book and inventory book: must be generated in XML format following the AEAT schema.
  • Approved software: businesses will need to use software that meets the requirements of the new regulation.
  • Record retention: electronic records must be kept for a minimum of 6 years.
  • Penalty regime: non-compliance may result in fines of between €1,000 and €50,000 per financial year.
